eToro Updates

on Sat May 23, 2015 4:56 pm
Leveraged Stock CFDs!

Following the release of real-time stocks last month, you can now leverage your stock CFD positions.

Starting from today, you can leverage any stock and Bitcoin trade, up to x5. You can choose between no leverage (x1), x2 and x5 on both long and short positions of all sizes.

You can easily set the amount of leverage for each position in the trade settings dialog box in the eToro WebTrader:

Please keep in mind that when it comes to rollover fees and dividends, these fees will be calculated based on the number of units you bought or sold, not on your investment amount.

When choosing your leverage, keep in mind that even the smallest leverage can greatly increase your level of risk. You can keep tabs on your overall risk strategy by regularly checking your risk score in your user stats page.

Minimize Your Risk!

The markets can be unpredictable at times and even the best traders can face setbacks. At eToro, we take responsible trading seriously which is why we take every measure to help you deal with such setbacks.

What can you do when hit with a CSL (Copy Stop Loss) that has resulted in the closing of your copied positions?

The answer is simple…diversification.

You can lower your risk by diversifying your portfolio and by copying new investors.

Tip: If you are currently copying investors with risk score of 7 and up, it is recommended that you take steps to lower your risk score by diversifying your portfolio before the CSL hits.

Here are our 3 favorite searched from the People Discovery Tool to help you diversify your portfolio:

  • Popular Investors with a consistent low risk strategy.
  • Trending Popular investors with an average risk strategy.
  • New & Trending Popular investors with an average risk strategy.

Browse through our favorites now and hand-select the traders which best suit your trading needs.

Real-Time Stock Trading

Important update: Some of you have asked about stock dividends. Dividends are a portion of the company’s earnings distributed to shareholders as decided upon by the company’s board of directors. As you know when you trade stocks at eToro you buy/sell CFDs and don’t hold actual shares. Nevertheless, there will be dividends paid (for long positions) and charged (for short positions) for every stock trade (leveraged or unleveraged) at eToro. The dividend amount will be credited/debited at the end of each trading day, according to the number of units of stock you are holding, and will be based on the dividend amount announced for each stock.

As you all know, stock CFDs trading at eToro has so far been done through orders, aggregated and executed in daily batches.

But that is all about to change! We are extremely proud and incredibly excited to announce the upcoming launch of real-time stock trading on our platform.

Starting April 19th you will be able to open a position on any of the 230 stock CFDs we currently offer, in real-time using all our trading platforms (be it the WebTrader, or the Mobile Trader apps).

That means instantaneous trade execution, which will enable you to take advantage of intraday price movements on stocks, just like you do on every other instrument.

And that’s not all! Integrating real-time stock trading across our systems will have multiple advantages. You will be able to:
- Open both Long (BUY) and Short (SELL) positions on all stocks
- Leverage your stock trades by x2 (coming soon!), or use no leverage (x1) like you did before – it’s up to you!
- Open and close stock positions from the WebTrader and from the Mobile Trading app – without going through the eToro OpenBook
- Use Stop Loss and Take Profit orders to limit losses and lock in profits and edit them 24/7
- Trade 24/7 – when the markets are closed your trade will generate an order which will be executed as soon as the markets open
- Copy more diverse traders – as more and more investors add stocks to their portfolios your Copy experience will become more diversified
- Invest as little as $25 in any stock – we enable fraction share investment, which means that you can invest as much as you want, no matter what the share price is.

Before you get started, here’s what you need to know about real-time stock CFDs trading

Variable Spreads: Since you’ll now be able to open both long and short positions on stocks, each stock will come with a buy and sell price, which means a spread between the two. However, stocks don’t have fixed spreads, the difference between the bid and ask prices is determined by market participants (buyers and sellers) – therefore the spread you will see on eToro will also change according to market conditions. This means that you have to place your Stop Loss and Take Profit orders carefully, to prevent them from closing your position due to the spread widening unexpectedly.

Holding fees: Buying stock CFDs entails paying a small holding fee. The holding fee (similar to the rollover fee in currency markets) will be charged once a day. You will be able to see all holding fees listed on our fees page once real-time stock trading is launched. Note that there will be no holding fees charged for unleveraged long positions (leverage of x1).

Changes to Stop Loss: Sometimes stocks, just like any other market, have periods of low liquidity (meaning it’s harder to buy or sell a certain amount). To protect you against losing more than the amount you’ve invested in the stock position (long or short), we will no longer allow setting the Stop Loss rate at 100% of the amount. The maximum Stop Loss rate will be specific for each stock and will be shown inside the open trade pop up.

Market orders: As mentioned above, you will be able to open a market order whenever the market is closed; this is true for stocks as well as for currencies, commodities and indices. Placing a market order means that the trade will be executed at the first available rate when the market opens. It also means that you can now copy over the weekend and if you choose to copy open positions, all open positions will be copied when the market opens.

In addition, it’s important to notice that with this change, the amount allocated to an order will not be available for trading, since the order amount will be considered as “reserved” equity unless you should cancel the order.

Trade size limitations: Bitcoin trades will be limited to 10 units per trade, and stock CFD trades will be limited to $10,000 per trade.

A big thank you goes out to our development team who have worked day and night to finally bring you real-time stock trading, and to you, our social investment community, who have given us invaluable feedback on the matter of stock trading on our platform. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Are you as excited as we are about real-time stocks? Give us a shout out and let us know what you think!

Note: Past performance is not an indication of future results. This post is not investment advice. CFD trading bears risk to your capital.

Trading Real-Time Stocks

on Fri May 29, 2015 5:07 pm
Trading Real-Time Stocks
Since we’ve launched real-time stock CFD trading, the trade execution procedure has moved from the eToro OpenBook to the eToro WebTrader or Mobile Trader if you’re trading from a portable device.

Naturally this has been causing some confusion as to how to find the stock you’re looking for using these two platforms. So we’ve decided to clear it up once and for all.

eToro WebTrader

In the WebTrader, due to the number of stocks in our offering we have chosen not to include them in the live rates panel. Instead you can open stock trades by entering your stock’s name in the search bar at the top of the screen:
Entering the first letters of your stock’s name will open up a selection of matching stocks:

Then once you click on the stock of your choosing you will get the trade settings dialog box:

Notice that you can choose to buy the stock at the current market rate, or you can click on “At Rate” to set a BUY/SELL order that will be executed if/when the stock price reaches your desired rate.

Once you click on “Send Order” your order will be opened and you will be able to see it in your Open Trades.

Mobile Trader

The same search based mechanism applies to trading stocks via the mobile app.To open a trade, all you have to do is click on the search button at the top right corner of the screen:

Start typing the name of your stock:

Tap on your stock of choice then choose whether you wish to buy or sell:

Set your trade parameters in the dialog box:

And that’s it, all that’s left to do is click on “Open Trade”!

eToro signs three year deal with West Ham United

4th June, 2015 London – Today, global social trading network eToro announced they are to partner iconic east London football club, West Ham United.
The agreement will see eToro become the club’s first official social trading partner from the start of the 2015/16 season.

This three year deal comes at an exciting time for both eToro and West Ham, with eToro securing significant funding from three major banks, including Commerzbank, in the last year; as well as the development of a ground-breaking new trading platform, to be released in the coming months.

The new platform supports those making their first steps into investing but also gives more experienced traders and investors the opportunity to manage their funds and get copied by other traders.

West Ham has qualified for next season’s Europa League and are currently recruiting a new manager to take the Club to new heights. As they prepare to pay a fitting farewell to the Boleyn Ground next season and move to London’s world-famous former Olympic Stadium in August 2016, they are on course for two of the most exciting seasons in their illustrious history.

Yoni Assia, CEO and Co-founder of eToro, said: “We are delighted to be partnering West Ham United at this exciting time for both us and the club. This deal reflects a number of positive growth areas for our business as well as the ambitions of the eToro brand in the UK and across the world. We really see this as a leap into the premier league for eToro!”

Felicity Croft, Commercial Director of West Ham United, added: “We are delighted to form this partnership with eToro, and we look forward to working closely together over the years to come. Many of the biggest Clubs in England have agreed partnerships with social trading companies in recent months, and for West Ham to attract such a large and globally-successful player in this sector is a sign of our growing global reach and ambition. It is clear that leading brands can see the exciting future that lies in store for West Ham United and are buying in to our potential.”

eToro provides over 4 million users access to social trading and investing through their bespoke platform, tapping into the wisdom of the crowd and encouraging people to connect with one another to discuss, trade, invest, learn and share knowledge across the network.

eToro believes passionately in empowerment and the value of opportunity and have entered into the world of football sponsorship to partner with a team who hold the same values. West Ham’s exciting plans for the future fit with those of eToro and both organisations are excited to be growing together in the coming years.

eToro reaches 100m trades

It seems as if we had reached 50 million trades only a moment ago, and here we are already at the 100 million mark! Check this out, it took us 6 years to get to 50 million trades, and less than a year to get from there to 100 million trades! What a crazy ride…

We’ve decided to have a close look at these 100 million trades and break them down every which way to show the makeup of our social investment network and the amazing statistics it generates.

1. As you may have noticed, our 100m trades survey confirms that copied trades are statistically more likely to be profitable than manual trades, with 83% of copied trades reaching profitability as opposed to just 58% of manual trades.

2. Our network is really embracing trading on the go. We’ve seen a huge 38% rise in mobile growth, thanks to our comprehensive set of mobile trading and eToro OpenBook apps for Android and iOS.

3. Our network has truly embraced responsible trading, with only 18% of trades opened with high leverage, as opposed to 59% with medium leverage, and 25% with low leverage. We’re very proud of our investors’ commitment to reducing risk, and we’re definitely on the right track to maintaining a truly sustainable investment network.

Unused Account Balance?

Experienced traders often fail to get the most out of their funds.

Experienced traders recognise the need to diversify their portfolios and invest in a wide range of assets, balancing their higher risk trades with lower risk investments. Most of the traders that I know want to maintain a high level of control over each investment and retain the ability to react to real time market changes. They practice additional risk management by investing cautiously, only placing a small amount of their equity in individual trades.

This careful application of risk management and close focus on individual trades can definitely help to reduce losses, regardless of whether you’re trading long/short strategies, using one or two instruments for trading and trying to predict the market direction, or systematically building a wide and diversified portfolio. One issue that many traders aren’t aware of is that they are only investing a small proportion of their equity (account balance) at any given time.

Uninvested equity is basically unexploited wealth (especially now, when global interest rates are effectively negative). It used to be possible to put your money in a savings account with your local bank and basically forget about it, expecting a small return every year. These days, traders need a more creative and energetic approach to money management; ‘warehoused money’ won’t grow. Dormant funds left in old fashioned financial institutions may even be reduced by account charges.  Traders need to take a wider view and consider the potential gains from their entire funds, rather than just their invested funds.

Can you make your non-invested account balance work for you?

One way to utilise dormant funds is to invest them in copy trades. You can set your account to automatically copy any trader or Popular Investor at a ratio that suits your budget and risk level. Whenever they open or close a trade your account will do the same. You can apply a high level of risk management by carefully analysing each Popular Investor’s Stats, risk level and by talking to them personally. Set the Copy Stop Loss tool to automatically halt any copy trade that doesn’t meet your financial expectations.

One can use our Discover People Tool to find people to copy, and use 40%-60% from the uninvested balance to work for him. Not using all the equity in the account balance, deliberately leaving a cash reserve to enable to react to market movements.

This is just one hypothetical example of how effective copy trading can utilise uninvested account balance. To use copy trading as an investment strategy you have to take the time to analyse the trading and goals of the people you want to copy – and be prepared to take some losses along the way. Many social traders recommend diversifying their People Portfolio in the same way that they diversify their manual trading portfolio.
Let’s see an example of how simple this can be::
You can also add Popular Investors to your Watchlists and monitor their performance until you are ready to copy them.
